She experienced racial prejudice and discrimination first hand growing up in Alabama. Ever since then, she proclaims gender equality, prison reform, and alliances across color lines. She has been to court and in jail, none of which held her back from fighting for her rights. Today, she is a professor at the University of California, where she teaches courses on the history of consciousness.
